Football

Apologies to any North American readers but this page is wholly concerned with the original game of football, which, strangely enough, is largely played with the feet rather than the hands, unlike the gridiron version. As the weeks and months go by we will attempt to bring as much useful (and sometimes not) information about the ‘beautiful game’, but in particular the major European leagues and international competitions.

Thomas Tuchel contacts players ahead of first England squad selection

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has begun contacting players ahead of naming his first squad since taking charge of the national team. The German was appointed to replace Gareth Southgate in October before officially starting his role at the beginning of this month. And the 51-year-old former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach has wasted little time in attempting to get to know his prospective players, including both recent call-ups and those who would be considered more on the fringes of selection. Tuchel’s personal approach in calls has been well…

Panama FA president suspended after calling women’s national team player ‘fat’

FIFA has suspended president of the Panama Football Federation (FEPAFUT) Manuel Arias after he called national team player Marta Cox “fat” and “out of shape”. Arias has been banned from all football-related activity for six months and fined CHF 10,000 ($10,932, £8,981) after FIFA’s ethics committee found him to be in breach of the governing body’s code of ethics for his remarks in March 2024. In October however, the club said the return would…

He is now in the process of finalising his move to Feyenoord, where he will sign a three-and-a-half year contract through to the summer of 2028. Bayern Munich close to agreement with Alphonso Davies over new contract

Bayern Munich are close to an agreement with Alphonso Davies over a new contract. The Canada (CANMNT) captain’s existing terms with the Bundesliga club are set to expire at the end of the season leaving him free to speak to overseas clubs. But after months of talks only a small gap remains between Bayern and the 24-year-old left-back’s expectations on a proposed four-year deal. Real Madrid and Premier League clubs are still waiting in the wings but a compromise is now likely to be struck that will see him stay…
